Keeping up with the Obamas

No more BBQ on Mondays?

No more BBQ for Obama on Mondays?

The first family planted a vegetable garden….I’m planting a vegetable garden (with fruit too). Seriously, my son and I put tiny little seeds in egg cartons full of dirt this weekend. Here’s what’s growing (fingers crossed!): broccoli, lettuce, scallions, tomatoes, carrots, cantaloupe and watermelon.

Now advocates are urging the Obama’s to go meatless every Monday. I’ve been serving meatless meals to my family once  a week for a little over a year now. (Go to The Cookie Sheet on this blog for menu plans, recipes and more!) The Meatless Monday people say if every American cuts out meat just one day a week it would save 12 BILLION gallons of gasoline a year and more. Check out their youtube movie, it shows all the great things that could happen if we all agreed to go curb our carnivore behavior.

Okay, full disclosure, I started both the garden and the meatless meals not to keep up with the Obamas or to save the planet, but for more selfish reasons. Here’s what motivated me: saving some money on food bills (the meatless move, much more so than the garden, which I’m worried will yield nothing after the deer and rabbit in our hood find it) and taking steps toward making my family healthier——plus the garden is a fun project for my kids. So I’m not congratulating myself on my ability to follow through on altruistic motives, BUT I am happy to know that by helping my family, I’m also (in a very small way) helping out the planet.  I hope the Obamas—and many more Americans—decide to accept the challenge.

I can’t speak for gardening…yet—my seeds are still germinating in egg cartons as I type this—but going meatless just one day a week honestly hasn’t been that hard to do for me and my family. Why not give it a go?

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, any attempts to keep up with the Obamas will have to stop with gardening and meatless meals. Their new dog, Bo, is cute, but with two kids under the age of three to chase around, who needs a dog? 🙂
